The new Group C regulations for 1982 attracted Porsche which continued to see a good investment in technological and market terms in endurance racing. The 956, presented for the 1982 endurance world championship, was competitive almost immediately, even winning the 1982 Le Mans 24 Hours. During the first season, the 956 remained in the hands of the official team only, but already since 1983 many private teams started fielding it with much success. The 956 was further developed a few seasons later in the type 962, initially for the IMSA, then, as the 962C, for Group C races. The 956 won again at Le Mans in 1983 with the official team and then in 1984-1985 with Joest Racing.
